Our Trustees

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees. Our Board Members bring a wealth of experience and are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity.

Our Trustees are: (in alphabetical order)

Sir Philip Carter CBE (Chairman of the Board)

Philip CarterSir Philip’s professional career was in The Littlewoods Organisation becoming Managing Director in 1976. He also became Chairman of the Merseyside Tourism Board in 1986. Sir Philip has had a long association with Everton Football Club being Chairman for 20 years and a board member for 30 years, and continues as a member of the board. He also has maintained a long association with Liverpool John Moores University being Chairman of Governors; Pro Chancellor; Chairman of University Trust.

Sir Philip was elected to the chairmanship of The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation in 1998.

Jim Couton

Jim CoutonJim Couton has been a friend of the foundation since 1998 and a trustee since 2001. He is now retired but has a lifetime of corporate experience at board level.

He served on the Coca Cola European Advisors Board and was Board Director of the Coca Cola and Cadbury joint venture, Coca Cola Shweppes Beverages Ltd.

He is a valued member of the trustee board and chairman of the employment committee.

The Right Honourable Lord Falconer of Thoroton

Lord FalconerCharlie Falconer became involved with the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation when a close friend, Deborah Hutton, died of lung cancer in July 2005. At that time he was Lord Chancellor so he could not become involved in any active way. Having left the government in June 2007, in September 2007 he became a trustee of the Foundation. He has spoken around the country on behalf of the Trust, and chairs the London Development Group, which aims to increase awareness of the trust in London and the South east, and to raise funds there for the trust.

Charlie was a commercial barrister for 25 years before 1997. He became solicitor general in 1997, when labour won the election. For the next 10 years he held a succession of ministerial posts, for the last four years as Lord Chancellor. He is married and has four children and works as a lawyer with an US law firm.


David Gilligan

David GilliganDavid Gilligan is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Addenbrooke’s & Papworth Hospitals, Cambridge, UK. He studied medicine at the Universities of Edinburgh & Cambridge and trained in Oncology at the Christie Hospital, Manchester; Royal Marsden Hospital, and University College Hospitals, London. He is a fellow of The Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh and The Royal College of Radiologists.

His main clinical interests are in all aspects of Lung Cancer & Thoracic Oncology especially patient experience and is an enthusiastic participator in clinical trials. He has been a member of the NCRI Lung Cancer Studies Group. He is a longstanding member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). He is currently a member of UK Department of Health Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma Advisory Group, Specialist Advisor to Macmillan Cancer Support and CancerHelp UK and is an Associate Partner of the UK Lung Cancer Coalition (UKLCC).

He lives in Suffolk and is married with two teenage children.

Sharron Heginbottom

Sharron HeginbottomSharron was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer in 2005, when she was a healthy, non-smoking 41 year old. She had a lower lobectomy on her right lung after a long course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Sharron was appointed as a Patient Trustee shortly after completing her treatment. Being a patient herself gives a true insight into the needs of people affected by lung cancer. Her experience has given her the opportunity to speak out about early detection of lung cancer.

Sharron lives in Reading with her partner Mark, plays golf and enjoys travelling.

Euan Imrie

Euan ImrieEuan Imrie was recruited as Trustee for his business and financial expertise in 2009. As a qualified accountant his business career has taken in the electronics industry with Unisys, management consulting with Price Waterhouse and retail with Littlewoods, including a spell there as Group Finance Director. In more recent times, and after many years as a school governor, he has taken up the role of Bursar at Sandbach School. Within the charity he has taken on the Chairmanship of the Finance and Audit Committee.

Originally from Edinburgh Euan now lives with his partner in Liverpool and between them they have three daughters.

David Maples

David MaplesDavid Maples is a partner based in the Liverpool office of Brabners Chaffe Street LLP (Solicitors) and has over 25 years experience in corporate and commercial law (advising both public and private companies – including charities and third sector organisations – on all aspects of business law). Born and brought up in Liverpool, David became especially interested in the work of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation when his mother was diagnosed with the disease in 2006. He subsequently became a trustee in 2008. David now lives in Cheshire with his wife Meryl, and their three children (Rebecca, Emma and Christopher). When not working, David tries in the main to divide his time between his family, the Church and Everton Football Club (though not always in that order). In addition, he also enjoys most other sports (nowadays limited to watching rather than playing), music and generally relaxing with friends.

Dame Gill Oliver

Gill OliverGill Oliver completed nurse training at the Middlesex Hospital in London, which engendered a life-long commitment to cancer services and the care and support of people affected by cancer. She has held a number of clinical and managerial posts in the NHS and a national advisory post in the Royal College of Nursing, all related to cancer services.

She was Director of Service Development for Macmillan Cancer Support between 2000 and 2004, and was responsible for expanding and developing services for people affected by cancer. In October 2004 she retired from her full time post but for two years continued to work in a part time consultancy capacity as Advisor for Nursing and Allied Health Professionals.

Gill has been an invited speaker at meetings and conferences nationally and internationally, has contributed to multi-author texts and to professional journals. She has been a member of the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Cancer Care, and a Trustee of the National Council for Palliative Care. Gill joined the trustee Board of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation in 2005 and was delighted to have been asked to head up the Women Against Lung Cancer Campaign the following year.

Peter Rainey

Peter RaineyPeter’s life was interrupted by a lung cancer diagnosis in 2004 despite being a healthy and active lifelong non-smoker.

Prior to his diagnosis, Peter had a successful career in the information technology industry. He also ran his own training and management consulting business.

Peter now uses his professional skills and energy to engage in Patient and Public Involvement activities. His hope is that he can help to improve the experience and the outcomes for cancer patients.

In addition to his strong associations with the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, Peter makes a contribution to the UK cancer research effort at a number of levels. He is a lay member of the National Cancer Research Institute Board Sub-Group on Clinical and Translational Research. He has served as a member of the Advisory Group of COMPASS, one of two NCRI-backed research groups focused on Supportive and Palliative Care. He is also a founder member of a consumer research panel at his local cancer Clinical Trials Unit in Glasgow and is a member of the “Living with Cancer” group, which forms part of the Scottish Government’s Cancer Taskforce.

Peter is married, lives in Glasgow and is a keen and ever-optimistic golfer.
